Dissociations of the molecular ions of neopentane, 2hyphen;methylpentane, 2,3hyphen;dimethyl butane andnhyphen;octane, formed in chargehyphen;exchange collisions with Hgplus;, were studied using an inhyphen;line tandem mass spectrometer. The effect of collision chamber temperature upon the observed dissociations was examined. The results are in good agreement with previous calculations, based on the quasiequilibrium theory (QET) for unimolecular reactions and on the alkane photoionization data.
