摘要

Themhyphen; orphyphen;fluorobenzyl radicals were prepared by xhyphen;irradiation of the precursor fluorotoluenes in argon at 10 K. The samples in an external magnetic field were excited with circularly polarized light obtained by passing the output of a Hendash;Cd laser through a lgr;/4 plate. The right and left circular polarization components of the fluorescence output were alternately sampled by means of a photoelastic modulator and a digital synchronous computer. The results showed that there is net circularly polarized emission from the excited electronic states of doublet organic free radicals, thus demonstrating that the populations of the excited state magnetic sublevels are related to the population distribution in the ground state. The intensity of the effect is linearly dependent upon external magnetic strength because of the increase in the Zeeman splitting.
