The Anglo-Dutch energy major has announced plans to launch a $300MM forestry program as a means to offset carbon emissions from its oil and gas operations. As part of the program,Royal Dutch Shell will plant large forests in the Netherlands and Spain over the next three years. The company will also provide motorists the option of buying these carbon offsets at the pump.Maarten Wetselaar,Shell's Director of Gas and New Energy, claims this new forestry program offers a business opportunity for Shell.“We believe that, over time,we will be building a business, because these carbon credits will become more valuable as carbon becomes more constrained.”
