The method used by Benedek to calculate the cohesive energy of solids from shockhyphen;wave compression data is generalized in this paper to include the effect of the volumetric dependence of Gruuml;neisen's parameter ggr;; this is done using for ggr; a series expansion in the relative compression. It is found that the effect of this correction is negligible, especially at low pressures. The results obtained by this method, when compared with those of the numerical calculation of the integral expressing the formal solution of the differential equation, show that the approximation method is slowly divergent. These results lead to the conclusion that, in all cases, it is preferable either to calculate numerically the integral expressing the formal solution of the differential equation for the cohesive energy, or to take only the lowesthyphen;order approximation in both the Gruuml;neisen's parameter and in the solution.
