Sodium alginate, a product extracted from brown seaweeds (Phaeophyceae), showed considerable promise as a flocculant for the removal of protein from meat‐processing effluents. The optimum pH for treatment was in the range 3.5 to 4.5 and sodium alginate doses in the range 25–100 g m‐3were effective. The solids recovered by this treatment were low in ash and high in protein, and because alginates are non‐toxic, these solids may find application as an animal feed supplement. The use of dried ground seaweed for effluent treatment is also discussed.
