Cases of malaria have increased steadily in Japan during the past 20 years, and deaths have been reported. Patients with malaria were all infected in regions where the disease is prevalent (imported malaria). A report from the former West Germany noted a high mortality rate (9.3) among patients with falciparum malaria. According to the report, the pathological manifestation of the disease and its complications are extremely complex. This report discusses malaria in Japan, especially falciparum malaria, with particular emphasis on the above findings.
