A new expression for the osmotic coefficient of polyelectrolyte solutions has been derived by differentiating the electrostatic energy with respect to volume at constant electrostatic configurational entropy. The derivation is based on the cell model of polyelectrolyte solutions. The resulting equation relates the osmotic coefficient to the concentration of simple ions adjacent to polyion. The implications of this expression for salthyphen;free solutions and for ternary mixtures are discussed.
