The spin Hamiltonians of Cr(ox)33minus;in the crystalline hosts K3Al(ox)3middot;3H2O, (NH4)3Al(ox)3middot;2H2O, and Na3Al(ox)3middot;5H2O have been evaluated from ESR spectroscopy and compared with the Cr3plus;:NaMgAl(ox)3middot;9H2O results. TheDparameter (0.72thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;0.06 cmminus;1) is relatively insensitive to environment butEvaries from zero to 0.1 cmminus;1. A comparison of the ESR and optical spectra indicates the need to include rhombic components in ligand field treatments of2Eand4T2splittings. The sohyphen;called monoclinic and heated Cr3plus;:NaMgAl(ox)3middot;9H2O forms behave identically in ESR and optical measurements.
