The design and construction of an anaerobic digester of 23 m3capacity at a fruit and vegetable processing factory is described and results of 3 years of operation on waste fruit solids are presented. Destruction of organic matter ranged from 79 to 96 and energy produced as gas amounted to 1.6 #x2010; 2.7 times the electrical energy consumed. Higher energy returns appear possible at higher average loading rates and by using digesters of simpler design.
