Twohyphen;photon excitations from the xenon ground state into the region of the 6pconfiguration were measured with frequencyhyphen;doubled light of a tunable pulsed dye laser. Experimental twohyphen;photon transition probabilities for theJ= 0 and 2 states are compared with theoretical estimates. For atomic transitions populating the 6pVerbar;1/2Verbar;0, 6pVerbar;3/2Verbar;2, and 6pVerbar;5/2Verbar;2states the following pressure shift parameters bgr;/Nwere found: minus;(2.5plusmn;0.2)times;10minus;9, minus;(2.7plusmn;0.2)times;10minus;9, and minus;(2.8plusmn;0.2)times;10minus;9sminus;1thinsp;cm3, respectively. In addition to atomic twohyphen;photon transitions, molecular absorptions were observed. Two vibrationalvprime; progressions converging towards the 5dVerbar;7/2Verbar;3dissociation limit could be identified. The energy difference of (19.4plusmn;1.0) cmminus;1coincides with known values for the ground state vibrational separation Dgr;G(1/2).
