The properties of the europium benzoylacetonate laser are described in detail. The effect of an extremely high absorption constant is demonstrated by comparing outputs obtained from cells 0.47 cm and 0.10 cm in diameter. The outputs are quite different as revealed by a study of farhyphen; and nearhyphen;field patterns, relaxation oscillation, and spectral output. Computed and measured thresholds are compared with those of ruby crystals. Measurements of the energy output of the laser and an estimate of the losses in the resonator are reported.
