We have developed a head-up display (HUD) for aircraft, utilizing the holographic technology, and started its mass production in 1998. A HUD, installed at the front of the cockpit, displays flight information data overlapped on the outside view to reduce the workload of the pilot's eyes. Our newly developed holographic HUD (H-HUD) ensures wider field-of-view than conventional HUDs, and also enables so-far-impossible video image display. This technical innovation was made possible through the effective use of the Shimadzu-original holographic combiner element, which had been realized after more than 10 years of research. Being produced by recording the interference fringes of light, to obtain very complicated surface which is unobtainable with a mechanical grinding method, a holographic combiner virtually works as a mirror. Highly precise fabrication technique and workmanship are required in the mass production of H-HUDs.
