Mombasa is overwhelmingly the dominant port, urban and industrialcomplex on the Kenya coast. Improvements in operational efficiency,management restructuring and the revitalization of the port in thecompetitive context of the East African port system as a whole arecritically important current policy objectives. These issues arediscussed in the context of the character and development of theport. Two further issues are outlined f the proposal to establish afree port at Mombasa. and the idea of developing a second deepwaterport elsewhere on the Kenya coast. Both are considered interestingbut premature.
