The photolysis of CCl3H in the presence of ethane yielded the following reaction products: CH2Cl2, and C2H5CHCl2, C2H5CCl3, (CHCl2)2, C2HCl5, C2Cl6, and C4H10. The formation of these products is explained by recombination and disporportionation reactions of the radicals produced in Reactions (1)ndash;(3):CHCl3plus;hvrarr;CHCl2plus;Cl,Clplus;C2H6rarr;C2H5plus;HCl,Clplus;CHCl3rarr;CCl3plus;HCl.Data regarding various ratios of rate constants for recombination and disproportionation reactions of these free radicals are given and discussed. An approximate valuek2thinsp;sol;thinsp;k3thinsp;sime;thinsp;0.1is derived for H atom abstractions by Cl atoms from ethane and chloroform.
