The resonant Raman spectrum of gaseous bromine excited by the 4880 Aring; radiation of an argon ion laser was carefully studied. The fundamental and eight overtones were investigated with high resolution. TheSbranches, which form broad bumps in the fundamental and the first overtone regions, develop into sharp band heads after Dgr;v=2. The band heads ofQandSbranches spread out and were well resolved in high order overtone regions. The data on the fundamental, the first, the second and the fifth overtones were presented to illustrate the above features. The measured peak positions were consistent with the calculated positions of the band heads ofQandSbranches of the three isotopic molecules.
