Lake Paeaejaervi ice station, the first of its kind to be used in Finnish lakes, recorded an extensive set of air-ice-water data in winter 2002-2003. Compared with the heat flux over the ice, the conductivity heat flux inside the upper layer of the ice was lower and less variable, possibly because the snow cover buffered much of the heat exchange with air. The ir-radiance at 1~# and 2~# PAR sensors showed large variation due to a 5-cm snow-ice formation above the top sensor of 1~# and the difference in snow cover above 1~# and 2~#. According to the depth-averaged extinction coefficient, the extinction distance was around 10 cm for snow-ice and 1.2-2 m for clear congelation ice.
