The representation of two-dimensional electromagnetic or acoustic fields in open planar structures is examined. It is shown that the field can be exactly represented by a series of functions called radiation functions in the paper. This series retains some of the characteristics of the eigenmode expansion for closed structures and its terms are susceptible to easy physical interpretation as contributions to the radiation field of all the solutions of the structure modal equation. The mathematical properties of the radiation functions and methods for evaluating the sum of the series are dealt with.
