BT's 21st century network architecture, with its multiservice design, presents the possibility of deploying exchange equipment in street furniture. This article considers the use of the street multiservice access node (SMSAN) as the first point of aggregation in some locations to enable an optimised cost/capability architecture for network access. It looks at its use as an enabler for the disposal of unwanted operational buildings and considers the viability of SMSAN as a proposition for solving broadband reach and bandwidth limitations.
