The linewidth of the 91,9rarr;82,6transition of SO2, broadened by carbon dioxide, has been measured. The measured linewidth for SO2sngbnd;CO2collision is 7.22 Mc/mm. The hardhyphen;sphere collision diameter corresponding to this is 8.01 Aring;. The result has been explained by Anderson's theory on the basis of dipolemdash;quadrupole interaction. The quadrupole moment of carbon dioxide so evaluated is 5.37times;10mdash;26esu.
