The vacuumhyphen;ultraviolet photolysis of films of solid ethane has been studied both at 1470 and 1236 Aring;. The product distributions have been measured and evidence is presented for the quenching of excited ethane and ethylene. The overhyphen;all mechanism, with the exception of quenching reactions, appears to be the same as in the gashyphen;phase photolysis.
