Thirteen elderly, oedematous subjects were studied while receiving hydrochlorothiaxide and amiloride. The serum potassium was maintained even though no potassium supplements were given. There was, however, a fall of serum sodium and a rise of blood urea and uric acid. The urinary potassium excretion was higher during the period of administration of amiloride, though the dietary intake was poor. There appeared to be an increase in the urinary output of calcium.
