An atomic interferometer for rotation sensing is proposed. The arms of the interferometer are enclosed in a Faraday cage, and when a potential is applied to the cage, the resultant phase difference in the counterpropagating atom de Broglie waves due to rotation can be much larger than the Sagnac phase shift. This effect, being quantum mechanical in nature, could be used to increase the rotation sensitivity of atomic interferometers. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
