The first observation of the magnetic linear dichroism (MLD) of a matrixhyphen;isolated sample is reported. Iron atoms isolated in a krypton matrix at 4.2 K display a magnetic linear dichroism spectrum which is complementary to its magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectrum. The combination of MLD and MCD is shown to be a powerful method for the assignment of the spinhyphen;orbit multiplet levels of atomic excited electronic states.
