There are two methods to improve the tracking performance of an α-β filter for radar tracking. The first method is to improve measurement accuracy. The second method is to increase a track update-sampling rate. In this paper, we compare these two methods using the steady state variance of the predicted position for a constant velocity target under the condition that the steady state errors for a constant acceleration target are the same. We conclude that the tracking performance of the increasing the track update-sampling rate is better than that of improving measurement accuracy when the radar resources allocated to tracking are the same.
