ABSTRACTThe possible use of spent grain liquor and lager tank sediment as fermentation media for the production of citric acid by variousAspergillus nigerstrains has been investigated. A strain ofA. nigerATCC 9142, on spent grain liquor, gave a citric acid concentration of 19 g/L, representing a yield of 78.5 (w/w) based on total reducing sugars consumed. On lager tank sediment 11.5 g/L citric acid were produced. The yield of citric acid, based on the total reducing sugars consumed, was 57.5 (w/w).
