The Andersonhyphen;Tsaohyphen;Curnutte theory of collisionhyphen;broadened spectral lines, as extended by Tejwani for octopolar interactions, has been used to compute linewidths for methane broadened by molecular nitrogen and oxygen. Widths of vibrationhyphen;rotation lines in the infraredhyphen;active fundamental bands ngr;2, ngr;3, and ngr;4; the combination bands ngr;2plus; ngr;3and ngr;3plus; ngr;4; and the overtone bands 2ngr;3, 2ngr;4, and 3ngr;3have been calculated for the symmetry speciesA, E, andFseparately, and for a large range of the total angular momentum quantum numberJ. The effect of the dipole moment of CH4due to vibrationhyphen;rotation interactions was considered. The temperature dependence of the linewidths has been obtained for 210deg;K le;Tle; 300deg;K. These results were used to compute corresponding airhyphen;broadened linewidths. It has been shown that the calculated linewidths depend significantly on the magnitude of the octopole moment for methane.
