Self-powered sensors and switches are beginning to offer a real alternative to batteries or complex cabling. ELECTRONIC systems that can harvest energy from the environment and recycle it as electricity are moving out of the lab and into real-world applications. At last month's Nanopower Forum in San Jose, specialists in energy harvesting explained how their designs are now being used to remove the batteries from wireless sensors.
