After nearly six years' work the Seattle World Cruiser Association's replica 1924 Douglas World Cruiser is on course to begin a round-the-world celebratory flight on April 6, 2009,85 years after four US Army Air Corps DWCs set off on the first successful circumnavigation. The four, each named after an American city, left Sand Point, Lake Washington, in April 1924. The lead aircraft, Seattle, soon crashed into an Alaskan mountainside in fog, the crew surviving. The replica, named Seattle II, will be almost identical apart from some concessions to safety.
