Electric field induced deformation of ruby

摘要

An extremely strong electrostatic field of 2times;104kV/cm was produced at the surface of a ruby crystal by charging it with electrons. The ruby under electrostriction showed a superlattice structure along the 110 axis whose long period was about 80 Aring;. The deformed ruby emitted a red light whose wavelength was approximately 6000 Aring;, while being irradiated with an electron beam.
