Increasing volumes of discarded computers haven't yet resulted in lower recovery costs. Local and state government concern about personal computer discards is mounting across the U.S. Computers and other electronic equipment often are characterized as contributing a growing amount of lead to the municipal solid waste stream. Yet, inadequate data exist on the volume of computers discarded annually, the cost of collecting and recycling such equipment, and ways to reduce the growing amount of discards (also see the "Recycling in Cyberspace" column in this issue).
