Processes for radiative and nonradiative decays of the most important emitting levels5D0,5D1, and5D2of the europium ion doping KY3F10are investigated. Both magnetic and electric dipole transition probabilities are calculated for the transitions between Stark levels. The rsquo;rsquo;forbiddenrsquo;rsquo; transitions are discussed. From the lifetime measurements versus the concentration of active ions and the temperature variation from liquid helium temperature to 800 K, evidence for multiphonon dehyphen;excitation processes is found. The influence of five phonons of 360 cmminus;1for5D1ndash;5D0dehyphen;excitation, six phonons of 420 cmminus;1for5D2ndash;5D1, permits the calculation of the rate constant at 0 K for each level.
