The Worcester Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1865, represented the realization of the vision of three Worcester businessmen: John Boynton (1791 -1868), Stephen Salisbury Ⅱ (1798-1884) and Ichabod Washburn (1798-1868), who sought to create an institution of higher learning that combined traditional academics with hands-on training.
