Australian warbird and agricultural pilot Col Pay was killed on December 7, 2007, while testing a modified Air Tractor 802 water-bomber over Lake Liddell in New South Wales. It was Col's 50th year of agricultural flying, and he was regarded as one of the most important people in the business. But it was as a warbird pilot and restorer that Col is known on the vintage aviation scene: "Col imported more warbirds than probably any other Australian, at huge personal expense", said Aerial Agricultural Association of Australia chief executive Phil Hurst. "His painstaking and faithful restorations - a Mustang, Kittyhawks and a Spitfire - speak volumes about his dedication and passion for maintaining Australia's heritage in airworthy condition.
