Effect of growing media on germination and initial seedling growth of Albizia lebbeck in terai zone of West Bengal.

An experiment was conducted at the Department of Forestry, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India, to determine the effect of growing media on the germination and initial seedling growth of Albizia lebbeck. The growing media were soil (T1); soil+sand+farmyard manure (FYM) at 1:1:2 ratio (T2); soil:sand:FYM at 1:1:1 (T3); soil+FYM at 1:1 (T4); soil+sand at 1:1 ratio (T5); and soil+sand at 2:1 ratio (T6). These media were prepared using nursery soil, river sand and well-rotten FYM. Maximum seed germination of 66.67 was recorded in T3, while minimum germination (40.0) was recorded in T1 and T6. All the initial seedling growth parameters (length, diameter and dry weight of root and shoot, and root:shoot ratio) were significantly better in equal proportion of sand, soil and FYM than with other media mixtures.
