A mathematical model based on first principles has been formulated to predict the behavior of the magnetic brush in the development zone of an electrophotographic process. As a first approximation, the brush is modeled as a collection of straight chains whose length distribution is derived from a magnetic energy minimization principle. Results with the model are compared with experimental measurements of the tangential and normal forces exerted by the brush on the photoreceptor. The agreement is sufficiently good to confirm the essential aspects of the theory.
