The trichloromethyl radical has been identified in irradiated single crystals of tricholroacetamide. When the magnetic field lies along the a axis of the monoclinic crystal it is also nearly normal to the plane of the three chlorine atoms and the spectrum may be interpreted as the superposition of spectra from the radicals35Cl3Cmiddot;,thinsp;35Cl237ClCmiddot;, and35Cl37Cl2Cmiddot;with the expected abundance ratios 27:27:9. To a good approximation35Cl and13C hyperfine splittings in this orientation may be taken as the principal values of the35Cl and13C hyperfine splitting tensors,Azzlpar;35Clrpar;equals;18.1thinsp;G,thinsp;Azzlpar;13Crpar;equals;136thinsp;G. Although the complexity of the spectra precludes a complete determination of the hyperfine splitting tensors, these data are sufficient to show that the radical is nonplanar and to provide considerable information concerning the electronic structure.
