Toriula ruralis, when subjected to various drying conditions, loses water until it maintains around 20 of its original fresh weight. On reintroduction to water, uptake is completed within 90ensp;s. Prolonged desiccation of the moss for 10 months resulted in no adverse effects on its capacity to resume protein synthesis rapidly on rehydration.
