摘要

TERSA, an acronym of Thermal Evaluation for Residual Stress Analysis is an entirely new technique which could provide the basis of an instrument for the non‐contacting and non‐destructive determ'nation of static and residual stresses in engineering components, assemblies and structures.Invented by scientists at the Admiralty Research Establishment, (ARE) Portsmouth, who conceived the SPATE system for dynamic stress measurements, the technique could be applied to a range of materials, including both ferrous and non‐ferrous metals, and also to plastics. Experimental work at ARE has confirmed that the rechnique is viable and would have considerable advantages over any of the residual stress measurement methods at present in use. industrial involvement is now being sought to set up a collaborative programme leading to the development, manufacture and marketing of a practical instrument.
