TURNING AN emerging technology into a thriving business is a hard trick to pull off. If the technology emerges from an academic department, it's unlikely that its inventors will have the business skills to create a successful start-up. If it emerges from a corporate research group, the processes and constraints of big business may stifle the innovation.
