All three Macedonian natural lakes have tectonic origin in the Pliocene Period (CVIJIC 1911), and all are shared with neighbouring countries: Lake Ohrid with Albania, Lake Prespa with Albania and Greece (Fig. 1), and Lake Dojran with Greece (Fig. 2). Lakes Ohrid and Prespa are located in the Sar-Pin-dus karstic system in the southwestern part of Republic of Macedonia but in different geological regions. Lake Ohrid is in a karstic region, separated from Lake Prespa by the karstic massif of Galicica Mountain; Lake Prespa is located at the touch of two geologically different masses, karstic on the west and granite on the east. Both originate from the ancient Dassaret Lake. Lake Dojran is located in a granite region in the southeast part of Republic of Macedonia (see Table 1 for basic characteristics).
