The magnetic susceptibilities of the Fe2plus;:ZnSe, Fe2plus;:CdSe, Fe2plus;:ZnTe, Fe2plus;:CdTe, Fe2plus;:ZnS, Fe2plus;:CdS, and Fe2plus;:ZnO crystals have been measured over the temperature range of 2ndash;300deg;K in order to determine the spinndash;orbit and trigonalhyphen;field (for CdS and ZnO) splittings of the ground orbital state5Eof Fe2plus;in the crystal lattice. The first five crystals are magnetically isotropic with no detectable trigonalhyphen;field effects, and their susceptibilities tend toward constant values at very low temperature. From the temperature dependence of the susceptibility, we obtain the spacings of theA1andT1component of the5Egroup of the first five crystals as 12, 12, 16, 18, and 15 cmminus;1, respectively. These results give spinndash;orbit coupling constantsverbar;thinsp;lgr;thinsp;verbar;thinsp;equals;thinsp;85, 81, 96, 99, and 99 cmminus;1, respectively, when used in conjunction with the optical data of the5Eminus;5T2transitions. The Fe2plus;:CdS crystals show a small magnetic anisotropy but otherwise similar susceptibility data which yield 16 cmminus;1for theA1minus;T1spacing, 1 cmminus;1for the trigonalhyphen;field splitting ofT1,andverbar;thinsp;lgr;thinsp;verbar;thinsp;equals;thinsp;97cmminus;1. For the case of Fe2plus;:ZnO, the magnetic anisotropy is much larger, and theT1levels split into two componentsA2andEwhich are 8 and 18 cmminus;1, respectively, above theA1ground state as determined from the magnetic data.
