Our customer requires us to apply a specified dry film thickness (DFT) to his painted components, but it can take at least one day after painting before the paint is dry enough for the measurement. Since our customer works on a just in time (JIT) basis, he also wants us to ship the painted components out of our shop as soon as the coating is dry and cured. That puts us into a Catch 22 situation, because he wants his components back before we have had an opportunity to measure the DFT From time to time his quality control folks have complained that we were under the specified thickness, and they sent the components back to us for another coat. Is there a quick and simple method for predicting what the DFT will be? The conversion from wet film thickness to dry film thickness is very simple. From the MSDS you can get the volume solids of the coating. In general, a coating that has a VOC of 3.5 lbs/gal has a volume solid of approximately 52 percent, but that can vary depending on the density of the solvents that are used.
