A group of Chinese and German scientists recently concluded a joint scientific expedition to Lake Nam Co in the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau. With an elevation of more than 4,700 meters above sea level and an area of more than 1,920 square kilometers, Lake Nam Co is the high est one in the world and the second largest saltwater lake in China. Scientists from the CAS Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP) and the Max Planck Institute of Biogeochem-istry (MPIB) set out on a joint expedition to the lake on August 5. To assure the success of the studies, the MPIB researchers brought special equipment with them from Germany, including lake drillers, dinghies, tents and sampling bottles. On August 8, the group arrived at Nam Co to examine the chemical nature of the lake water, descending rate of the sediments and variation of the lake characteristics.
