In Aquitaine, thermal muds are prepared by contact of alluvial or forestry substratum with thermal waters, during variable periods. Microorganisms of sanitary interest(Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicansthermotolerant coliforms andClostridium sp.)have been enumerated in ready#x2010;to#x2010;use muds.S. aureusandC. albicanswere absent from all samples. Coliforms were found in 22 of the samples, at low levels (less than 100 cfu g#x2010;1).P. aeruginosawas found in 28 of the samples.Clostridiumwere found in all the samples at levels varying from 101to 105cfu g#x2010;1.Clostridium bifermentansandC. sporogeneswhich are considered to be devoid of pathogenicity for skin, accounted for 72 of the isolates.
