Enhancement of change in the refractive index in an asymmetric quantum well

A threehyphen;step quantum well is proposed that increases the electrichyphen;fieldhyphen;induced change in refractive index and reduces transmission loss. The oscillator strength of then=1 heavy hole exciton can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude when an electric field is applied. This property results in a large change in refractive index and reduction in transmission loss. A low operating voltage is also possible.
