Combining data from electrical conductance experiments with quantum mechanical calculations, a physics group at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA) has been able to draw accurate pictures of the physical mechanisms that produce the observed electrical properties. Having a way to accurately determine the structure of nanowires helps significantly in construction of nanodevices—"It's like measuring current through an object you can't see to tell you what it looks like," said group leader Professor Uzi Landman.
