At the Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand's conference held at Shantytown over Queens Birthday Weekend, awards were presented to the following: 1. KiwiRail Infrastructure Improvement Award -Blenheim Riverside Railway for the completion of the replica Picton Railway Station and track upgrade. 2. Shantytown Steam Locomotive Award - Mainline Steam Trust for KA942. 3. Tramway Restoration Award - Western Springs Tramway for Wellington double-decker Tram No. 47'Big Ben'. 115-116 Letters to the Editor Pulling up the lines was not only short-sighted, but there seemed to be no thought given to the heritage of these lines or the possibility of other services (tourist operators, preservation societies etc) using them at some later point. It is interesting to note that in other parts of the country, lines which have been previously removed are now being re-laid, as KiwiRail creates new business opportunities and customers choose rail over road as the most practical form of moving their goods and products.
