This report describes our new turboblower, specifically designed for CO{sub}2 laser gas machining systems, also referring to some of the breakthroughs we have made in the course of its development. The noteworthy performances of this turboblower include 2000 m{sup}3/hr of gas flow rate and 1.9 of inlet/ outlet pressure ratio at 8 kPa of inlet pressure of a low-molecular-weight gas, which is a mixture of He, CO{sub}2 and N{sub}2. The main features of our new turboblower are: (1) An extremely compact design made possible through the use of a single stage compression system fully utilizing the high-speed rotation with higher pressure ratio for the low-molecular-weight gas. (2) Oil-free design of the laser gas circulation system, that does not trade off the running cost, made possible through the use of fresh laser gas for the maintenance of the machining system. With these features, our newly developed turboblower meets the requirements of the latest laser machining systems, such as a larger capacity and a higher speed, and is sure to find a wider field of applications.
