Two Patients with Delusions

A 62-year-old white woman, with no previous history of mental illness, was admitted to the psychiatric unit six times within 1 year. She had a bachelor's degree in English,had worked as a teacher in the past, and was still working in a self-employed job before her first psychiatric hospitaliza-tion. On every psychiatric admission, she was assessed as having multiple religious and somatic delusions. For example, she stated that she needed to be on life support because her brain was not getting enough oxygen. She complained of shortness of breath; however, pulse oxymetry recordings found oxygen saturation of more than 95, with normal chest X-ray and EKG.
