Nonuniversal theory proposes to reframe the learning/development dichotomy into a spectrum of important changes, ranging from small-scale learning events to large-scale developmental shifts. Using the theory’s universal-to-unique continuum as an organizing framework, several distinct change mechanisms are identified as necessary for movement through successive levels of various domains of knowledge. Identifying five such mechanisms of change through this application of nonuniversal theory is an important step toward transcending the learning/development dichotomy – a dichotomy that has probably outlived its usefuln
